The tournament, which is now known as the Acura Classic, began in 1984 at Morley Field in Balboa Park. Prize money was $50,000. Today, with prize money of $1,340,000, it is one of the premier events on the worldwide Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

There have been many changes since the tournament's inception. Venues and sponsors have changed and players have come and gone.

But if there is one thing that has remained consistent from the very beginning, it has been the hard work and dedication of the hundreds of volunteers who put in countless hours each year.

In the months leading up to the 2006 Acura Classic, we'll profile some of those volunteers who make the tournament a success. Check back for periodic updates during the year.
