Ron Marquez

Background: Marquez was born in Norfolk, Va. in 1973. He and his family moved to San Diego when he was seven months old. He currently works on the Information Technology Staff at Cathedral Catholic High School in Del Mar. He also serves as head varsity coach for the boy’s and girl’s tennis teams. He coached the girl’s team to the SDCIF Division III title in 2004.

Volunteer title: Marquez is co-coordinator for the Acura Classic ballpersons.

Number of years as an Acura Classic volunteer: Marquez has been a tournament volunteer for 17 years. He was a ball person from 1988 to 1991. He has been in his current volunteer position since 1992.

Favorite Acura Classic memory: The 1991 singles final between Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati. Capriati defeated Seles 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2). Marquez worked the match as a ballperson. “It was probably one of the best matches at the tournament. I remember the third-set tiebreaker being real intense,” he said.

Favorite tennis player: Monica Seles. “I like her work ethic and just the way she handles herself,” Marquez said.

Favorite book: The Da Vinci Code, the bestseller by author Dan Brown.

Favorite place to play tennis: San Diego in general. Morley Field and the Barnes Center

Favorite place to visit: Sydney, Australia. “People are friendly and it’s one of the few places that is like San Diego,” Marquez said.

Favorite TV show: Alias.

Favorite hobby: Playing golf.

Favorite movie: The Star Wars movie series.

Personal note: Marquez has attended all four of the tennis Grand Slam tournaments. (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open.) “All four were definitely unique,” he said.
