Background: Nelson has worked as
a physical education teacher at Oak Crest Middle School in Encinitas
for the past 17 years.
Volunteer title: She is a Reception Coordinator at the Acura Classic. In addition to handling
volunteer check-in and working at will-call during the tournament, she monitors
the entrance of the tournament trailer.
Number of years as tournament volunteer: She
has been a volunteer for nine years. "It's fun just being part of the tournament.
It's a great group of people to work with," she said.
Favorite Acura Classic memory: Nelson's
favorite memory is getting the chance to work with Connie Rifkin,
the tournament's Volunteer of the Year in 1998. "She taught me how to make
my job easier," she said.
Nelson describes Rifkin as, "dedicated, very sharp and talented." Rifkin
invited Nelson to become a tournament volunteer nine years ago, after
they met while shopping in a local Vons grocery store.
Favorite tournament match: Nelson says she doesn't have much time to watch tennis during the tournament,
but when she does, she will watch some of the action on the side courts where
she can watch up close.
Favorite tennis player: Meghann Shaughnessy. "Her and her coach are very considerate and polite. They
are very pleasant people to be around," Nelson said.
Favorite book: " 21 Balloons" by William Pene Dubois.
Favorite place to visit: Nelson
enjoys a quick get away to Mammoth for skiing and fishing.
Favorite TV show: The NewsHour With Jim Leher .
Favorite hobby: I like going for walks in different places.
Favorite movie: The Longest Day,
a movie about the Normandy Invasion --D-Day. It has an all-star
cast, which includes John Wayne and Henry Fonda.
Favorite musical artists: Asleep at the Wheel, a western swing band.
Personal note: Nelson is a "Master Sculler." She has sculled single, double and quad boats.
