Background: De Weese
is a 64-year-old retiree who lives in Carlsbad. She was formerly
a coordinator for the junior lifeguard program in the Marine Safety
Department for the City of Solana Beach.
Volunteer title: De
Weese and her husband, Al, serve as Directors of Volunteers at the
Acura Classic. Together they coordinate the 13 volunteer committees.
"It's very satisfying, extremely satisfying. You feel the satisfaction
of having good people working with you and knowing you can trust
them. Enough can't be said about the organizers," De Weese
said.
Numbers of years as tournament
volunteer: De Weese has been a tournament volunteer for eight
years. She was named Director of Volunteers in 2000.
Favorite Acura Classic memory:
Even though there have been many great matches at the Acura Classic,
De Weese says her favorite tournament memory was getting the chance
to work with former director of volunteers, Barbara Haasis. "She
stands out in my mind as an outstanding person. She was pretty much
my mentor. I followed her around and learned."
Favorite tournament match:
De Weese enjoys watching doubles matches during the tournament when
she gets a chance. "Because I play doubles, no matter who you're
watching or when you're watching, it's an education."
Favorite tennis player:
Lindsay Davenport. "She's a lady. She conducts herself with
dignity."
Favorite place to play tennis:
De Weese is an avid doubles player who plays three times a week.
She enjoys playing tennis at Oceanside's Mira Costa College. De
Weese also plays at Landes Park where she is a team captain at the
Oceanside Women's Tennis Club.
Favorite place to visit:
Yosemite Park.
Favorite TV show: West
Wing.
Favorite hobby: Her
favorite hobby is volunteering. "I'm a strong volunteer."
Besides the Acura Classic, De Weese serves as a volunteer for the
Boy Scouts of America, the Girls Scouts USA, the San Diego County
Registrar of Voters and the American Red Cross. In the past, she
has also volunteered for the Black Mountain Little League of San
Diego, the PTA at John Forward Elementary and Buena Vista Elementary
schools, the Junior Women's Club and St. Michael's By The Sea Episcopal
Church in Carlsbad.
Favorite movie: The Sound of Music.
Favorite musical artists: Enya, an adult contemporary
music artist.
Personal note:
In 1992 and 1993, she won the first place women's trophy in the
North County Tennis Network.
