Schnyder Overcomes Slow Start to Win
Can Patty Schnyder do it twice in a row?
On Wednesday night, the fifth-seeded Schnyder eliminated Argentina’s Gisela Dulko, 6-4, 6-1 in the last match of the evening on Stadium Court.
Schnyder advances to the third round where she will meet Paola Suarez, another Argentine, in a Thursday day session match scheduled for the Grandstand.
After losing the first three games of the first set of her second round match Schnyder found her groove and won the next 12 out of 14 games to close out the match in one hour and six minutes.
One of the few highlights for Dulko came in the last game of the match as the Argentine served to stay in the match at 5-1.
At 15-30, Dulko hit a crosscourt backhand that was called out, but point was replayed when Dulko challenged the call and won to the delight of the crowd who let out a loud cheer when chair umpire Leanne White of Australia announced that the ball had indeed landed in.
The point was replayed and Dulko netted a forehand to fall behind 15-40. On the next point, Schnyder won the match as Dulko’s down the line forehand hit the tape.
