Pierce’s Acura Classic Run Continues

Defending champion Mary Pierce easily advanced to the Acura Classic quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Finland’s Emma Laine.

On an overcast afternoon on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Pierce opened up a 5-0 lead to start the match which took one-hour and four-minutes. Laine won the next two games as she broke Pierce for the only time in the match and then held serve.

Serving for the set at 5-2, Pierce went on to easily serve out the set at love.

Pierce dominated the second set which took only 27 minutes. She broke Laine in the first game and then held for a 2-0 lead.

After Laine held serve, Pierce swept the last four games of the match, losing only six points in the process.

Pierce is playing her first tournament in six months after being off the tour since February due to a right foot injury.
  • Pierce advances to the quarterfinals where she will play the winner of the Maria Sharapova / Vera Zvonareva match.
