Chakvetadze Wins Russian Match-Up
It may have been difficult to tell apart the two players playing the last match of the day session on Stadium Court at the Acura Classic.
Both players wore the exact same black and blue teal Adidas outfit. Both players sported a golden California tan. Both players had their hair tied in a ponytail. Both players wore a white visor and both players were Russian.
The only way to tell them apart was at the end of their second round match as the winner, unseeded Anna Chakvetadze, flashed a big smile after eliminating third-seeded Nadia Petrova, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
Chakvetadze served well throughout the two-hour and 15-minute match as she served a dozen aces and never dropped serve.
After splitting the first two sets, Chakvetadze took control of the third set early as she broke Petrova in the first and third games to take a 4-0 lead.
Petrova held serve in the fifth game to get on the scoreboard. Later in the set, she served to stay in the match at 5-1.
Serving at 30-15, Petrova slammed two aces to hold serve and make the score 5-2.
For Petrova, it was too little, too late as Chakvetadze erased a break point at 30-40 and two points later closed out the match with an ace.
