Ivanovic Powers Her Way Past Morigami

Ana Ivanovic of Serbia brought her “A” game to Stadium Court for her first round Acura Classic match as she wasted little time in eliminating Japan’s Akiko Morigami, 6-2, 6-1 in one-hour and 11 minutes.

Playing in the last match of the evening, Morigami was kept on the run as Ivanovic, who is seeded 14th, dominated the match from the baseline.

After winning the first set in 39 minutes, Ivanovic took a 3-0 second set lead before Morigami held serve. Ivanovic then held serve and broke Morigami’s serve for the fourth time.

Ivanovic, who did not lose serve during the match, served at 5-1. While the Serbian used her power game most of the night, it was a change of speed that gave her match points as she hit a spin server wide for an ace.

On match point, Ivanovic drilled a down the line backhand winner to end the match and advance to the second round.
