Tu Wins All-American First-Round Match
This past Sunday, Meilen Tu earned a place in the Acura Classic main draw by winning her final round qualifying match.
On a cloudy and humid Monday afternoon at the La Costa Resort and Spa, she advanced to the second round of the main draw by outplaying fellow American Laura Granville 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, in a first round match on Stadium Court.
Both women slugged it out from the baseline, during the one-hour and 51-minute match, hitting the ball hard and deep.
After splitting the first two sets, Tu took control of the third set as she broke Granville twice and sprinted out to a 5-1 lead.
Tu served for the match at 5-1, but Granville broke back in the seventh game. Unshaken by failing to serve out the match, Tu stormed back in the next game, smacking an overhead winner to take the match.
Tu will face 8th seeded Martina Hingis in the second round.
