Frazier Moves Into Main Draw With Narrow Victory
The veteran stepped onto the court against the youngster.
It was a classic match between two Americans on the Grandstand at the 2006 Acura Classic as 33-year-old Amy Frazier played a final-round qualifying match against 21-year-olf Bethanie Mattek.
Experience won a narrow victory this time, as Frazier defeated Mattek, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (3) in a hard-hitting encounter which took two-hour and 17 minutes.
How close was the match? Each player finished the match with 110 points won. Each player had 16 break point opportunities. Frazier converted on six, while Mattek was successful on seven break chances.
The match came down to a third-set tiebreak. After losing the first point, Frazier won the next four out of five points to take a 4-2 lead. Frazier’s lead increased to 5-2 when Mattek hit a backhand that hit the tape and fell back on her side.
Frazier reached match point when she nailed a down the line forehand approach for a winner. On the next point, Mattek hit a strong serve which Frazier returned long.
At 6-3 in the tiebreaker, the entertaining match came to a close as Mattek sent a forehand long.
Frazier advances to the main draw where she will face Tatiana Golovin of France in a first round match.
