Jankovic Dispatches Kirilenko on Stadium Court
Unseeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia ousted 16th seeded 6-1, 6-4 in one-hour and 27 minutes in a first-round Acura Classic match on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa.
Playing under cloudy skies, Jankovic took control of the first set at 1-1 as she used two service breaks to win five straight games and wrap up the set in 29 minutes.
In the second set, Kirilenko rebounded to take a 4-1 lead. Jankovic then called for a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour trainer on the changeover and took a medical time-out to be treated for blisters on her left foot.
Following her treatment, Jankovic took advantage of a string of unforced errors by Kirilenko and came back to take a 5-4 lead.
Jankovic served for the match, but began the game by double faulting. Later in the game, with the score at deuce, the Serbian executed a perfectly hit drop volley winner to reach her first match point.
On the next point, Jankovic blasted a service winner to win the match.
