Ivanovic Ousts Veteran Frazier
Fourteenth-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia built large leads in both sets and then held off American veteran Amy Frazier, 6-3, 6-2 in a second-round Acura Classic match.
Playing the second match on Stadium Court, the 18-year-old Ivanovic showed that her game is more than just about power. She mixed up her game with a combination of power and touch as she kept the 33-year-old Frazier off balance.
Down 3-0 in the first set, Frazier hit three double faults to lose serve and make the score 4-0. Ivanovic increased her score to 5-0 as she held serve at love, smacking an ace on game point.
Frazier staged a brief rally as she captured the next three games in a row only to have Ivanovic serve out the set at 5-3 as the Serbian won her serve at love and hitting another ace on set point.
For Frazier the second set must have seemed like déjà vu as she fell behind 4-0 before she held serve and came back to break Ivanovic to make the score 4-2.
Serving at 30-30 in the next game, Frazier sent a short crosscourt forehand wide to give Ivanovic a break point.
That was all Ivanovic needed as she slammed a backhand down the line service return to earn the break and take a 5-2 lead.
Ivanovic took a 40-15 lead as she served for the match. After she double faulted and hit a down the line backhand into the net, the score stood at deuce.
The hard serving Ivanovic hit a 98-mph service winner to get to match point and then surprised Frazier with a 78-mph serve wide to her backhand which Frazier sent into the net.
