Frazier Surprises Golovin on Stadium Court
American Amy Frazier kept her hopes alive at the 2006 Acura Classic as the qualifier surprised Tatiana Golovin of France, 6-3, 7-6 (7) in a first-round match on Stadium Court.
On an overcast morning at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Frazier captured the first set in 32 minutes as she broke Golovin at love at 5-3.
In the second set, it was Frazier who fell behind 5-3 but she came back to tie the set at 5-5. Frazier served for a 6-5 lead, but hit two double faults and was broken at love as Golovin took a 6-5 lead.
Looking to take the match into a third set, Golovin served for the second set, but it was Frazier’s turn to break serve at love and the set went into a tiebreak.
Frazier, who committed a total of 11 double faults, got off to a rocky start in the tiebreaker as she hit two double faults and fell behind 5-1.
Fighting off three set points, Frazier rallied and at 7-7 in the tiebreaker she put away a high backhand volley winner to get to match point. On the next point, Golovin smacked a forehand wide to end the match which took one-hour and 23 minutes.
“I think I got a little lucky. I felt like I had served really well the whole match up until the end of the second set,” Frazier said. “So I just tried to forget about that (getting broken at 5-5) and keep playing each point.”
