India's Rising Tennis Star Shines in Qualifying Win

Sania Mirza is one of the most popular tennis players in India.

Following her Acura Classic debut on Stadium Court, it won’t be long before tennis fans in the United States will be familiar with the rising Indian tennis star.

Mirza, seeded first in the Acura Classic qualifying draw, advanced to the final round of qualifying by defeating Galina Voskoboeva of Russia, 6-1, 6-1.

Ranked 64th in the world, Mirza dominated Voskoboeva in the 55-minute match as she broke the 20-year-old Russian in the very first game of the match.

Mirza, who only dropped serve once, converted on six of eight break points.

After winning the first set in 28 minutes, Mirza built a 4-0 second-set lead. The talented Indian went on to easily serve out the match at 5-1.

  • Mirza will play Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine in the final round of qualifying.
  • Mirza reached the third round of the 2005 Australian Open as a wildcard.
  • This last February, Mirza became the first Indian woman to capture a WTA Tour singles title when she won her first career title in India at the Hyderabad Open.
  • Mirza made her Wimbledon debut this year losing a three-set match to US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round.
  • Voskoboeva is ranked 134 in the world.
  • Voskoboeva was making her Acura Classic debut.
  • Voskoboeva lives in Moscow, Russia.
