Spaniards Win Acura Classic Doubles Title

Just when it looked like Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano Pascual were about to lose to Ai Sugiyama and Daniela Hantuchova, they came to life and staged a spirited comeback to capture the 2005 Acura Classic Doubles title.

Martinez and Ruano Pascual defeated Sugiyama and Hantuchova, 6-7 (7), 6-1, 7-5, in a match that ended at 8 p.m. on Stadium Court.

After splitting the first two sets, Martinez and Ruano Pascual fell behind 5-3 in the final set, but fought off multiple championship points and won four straight games to win the match.

It was a long day for Sugiyama who lost in straight sets to Mary Pierce in the singles final earlier in the day. On Saturday night, Sugiyama and Hantuchova finished their semifinal victory over Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs at 11:53 p.m.
