Schnyder Grinds Out Victory Over Peschke

Peschke of the Czech Republic and Switzerland’s Schnyder battled it out for nearly two hours on a bright, sunny day on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

One service break in the eighth game was all Schnyder needed to secure the first set.

The Swiss player opened the second set with a service break when Peschke’s attempted backhand dropshot failed.

Schnyder looked in control and was on her way to a straight set victory, but Peschke fought back to tie the set at 3-3 when Schnyder hit an overhead into the net on break point.

Peschke lost her serve at love as she netted a high forehand volley on break point to give Schnyder a 6-5 lead.

Despite jumping out to a 30-0 lead as she served for the match, Schnyder dropped her serve when she sailed a backhand wide to send the set to a tiebreak.

Peschke hit four winners on her way to winning the tiebreak to even the match. On set point, she executed a perfectly placed cross court backhand volley.

In the third set it was all Schnyder as she built a 3-0 lead in winning the set in 32 minutes.

“A win is a win and I’m back tomorrow,” Schnyder. “My timing wasn’t really on. I think she was playing better at the end of the second set, hitting winners and putting pressure.”
