Pennetta Cruises Past Irvin

Italy’s Flavia Pennetta took a little over an hour to defeat American Marissa Irvin, 6-2, 6-2, in a first-round Acura Classic match on Stadium Court.

Pennetta, seeded 15th, was solid from the baseline as she made a successful Acura Classic debut on a cool, partly cloudy afternoon at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

After losing the first set in 28 minutes, Irvin jumped out to a 2-0 second-set lead when Pennetta double-faulted on break point in the second game of the set.

However, Irvin’s success was short-lived as Pennetta regrouped and broke Irvin’s serve three times to close out the match.

Pennetta is ranked 24 in the world.
Pennetta will face Japan’s Akiko Morigami in the second round.
