Dementieva Quickly Moves Into Acura Classic Final Four
Fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia moved into the Acura Classic semifinals as she eliminated unseeded Amy Frazier of the United States, 6-2, 6-1, in 62 minutes in the first quarterfinal match of the day on Stadium Court.
Dementieva will meet fourth-seeded Lindsay Davenport in Saturday's first semifinal.
On a cool, overcast morning at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Frazier and Dementieva exchanged early service breaks in the first set, but at 2-2, the Russian lost only seven points in the next four games to win the set 6-2.
In the second set, Dementieva capitalized on two service breaks to establish a 4-0 lead.
After Frazier held to make the score 4-1, Dementieva fell behind love-30, but recovered to hold serve and extend her lead to 5-1.
Serving to stay in the match, the American lost the first point when she netted a forehand.
Dementieva would end the match with three straight winners. On match point, she blasted a forehand service return winner past Frazier to seal her spot in the semifinals.
