Davenport Sweeps Past Martinez to Reach Final Eight
In a third-round match between two former Acura Classic champions, fourth-seeded Lindsay Davenport powered her way to 6-1, 6-2 victory over Spain’s Conchita Martinez on Stadium Court.
Davenport took just 47 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals as she eliminated the unseeded Spaniard on a warm, sunny day at the La Costa Resort and Spa.
After winning the opening game at love on her serve, very little went right for Martinez for the remainder of the set. She proceeded to lose 24 of the next 26 points including 17 in a row.
At 5-1, Davenport easily served out the first set, which lasted only 20 minutes.
In the second set, Davenport continued to pressure Martinez as she lost a total of three points while serving.
At 2-2, the hard-hitting American allowed Martinez only four points in winning the last four games to end the match.
