Davenport Rolls Past Sprem in Night Session Match

Fourth-seeded Lindsay Davenport got off to a slow start in her second-round match against Karolina Sprem of Croatia, but once she got going, there was no stopping her as she rolled to a 6-4, 6-0, victory at the Acura Classic.

Playing on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Sprem took a 4-3 lead in the first set, but would not win another game as Davenport found the range on her shots.

The hard-hitting American would win 12 of the last 14 points on her way to winning the first set 6-4.

The second set, which took 21minutes, was no contest as Davenport allowed Sprem a total of eight points.

Davenport put an exclamation point on her strong performance in the final game of the match. Serving at 5-0, 30-love, she stroked a dazzling crosscourt forehand winner to reach match point.

At 40-love, Davenport boomed a deep serve to Sprem’s backhand and the Croatian’s return fluttered high over the net into the doubles alley.

Davenport advances to a third-round meeting with unseeded Conchita Martinez of Spain.
