Second-seeded Mauresmo Falls to Molik in Acura Classic Upset

Australia’s Alicia Molik provided the Acura Classic with its biggest upset so far as she shocked second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in a Wednesday afternoon match.

Serving for the match at 5-3 in the third set, the large Stadium Court crowd at the La Costa Resort and Spa cheered loudly for both players. Molik showed no signs of nervousness as she prepared to serve.

During the first point of the ninth game, the Australian traded numerous groundstrokes with Mauresmo until the Frenchwoman finally sent a backhand wide to make the score 15-love.

Two points later, with the score 40-0, Mauresmo sprayed a forehand wide as Molik celebrated her victory.

Molik advances to a third round match against unseeded American Amy Frazier.
