French Open Champion Cruises Into Third Round at Acura Classic

Third-seeded Anastasia Myskina of Russia advanced to the third round of the Acura Classic as she defeated Austria’s Barbara Schett, 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

Myskina, who captured the French Open title earlier this year, put away the first set in 35 minutes as she took a 5-3 lead and served it out at love.

The Russian, who wastes very little time in between points, quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Schett mounted a comeback to tie the set at 4-4 as she broke Myskina twice.

The next game went to deuce four times before Myskina hit a forehand winner off Schett’s drop shot on break point to take a 5-4 lead.

As Myskina served for the match, she took advantage of three unforced errors from Schett to take a 40-15 lead. On her first match point, Myskina slammed a forehand winner down the line to wrap up the match in one-hour and nine minutes to complete.

“I was up 4-0 in the second set and I kind of lost concentration and Barbara started playing a little bit better,” Myskina said. “I’m just real happy it was in two sets.”

  • Myskina will play the winner of the second round match between Chanda Rubin and Jelena Kostanic.
  • Myskina, ranked fifth in the world, is making her second career appearance in the Acura Classic. She lost in the third round here in 2002.
