Rubin Makes Short Work of Fourteenth Seed
While the air grew chilly on Stadium Court on Monday night at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Chanda Rubin’s game heated up.
In the last match of the night session, Rubin easily defeated 14th seeded Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi of Israel, 6-0, 6-3 in 53 minutes in a first-round Acura Classic match.
With the temperature dropping in Carlsbad, Rubin won the first set at love in 20 minutes and would go on to build a 4-2 lead in the second set.
The American, who is ranked 23 in the world, went on to break Smashnova-Pistolesi at 5-3 to seal the match.
Rubin advances to the second round where she will play Croatia’s Jelena Kostanic.
