Frazier Eliminates Mandula to Advance to Second Round
Amy Frazier of the United States became the first player to move into the second round of the 2004 Acura Classic as she defeated Petra Mandula of Hungary 6-4, 6-4, on a warm, partly overcast morning at the La Costa Resort and Spa.
In the first set, Frazier took a 5-4 lead and broke Mandula at love to win the set. The second set was nearly a carbon copy of the first as Frazier once again had a 5-4 advantage. She broke the Hungarian at love again as Mandula double faulted on the first match point.
“I felt really good. She hit the ball so hard. I knew I had to get the ball deep. Overall I was really happy with the way I played,” said Frazier, who won the match in 59 minutes.
“I love these tournaments. I love playing in California on the hard courts,” she added.
Frazier will face the winner of a first-round match between wildcard entry Ashley Harkleroad of the United States and 13th seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.
