Defending Acura Classic champion Maria Sharapova of Russia picked up where she left off last year as she fired nine aces in powering her way past Tamarine Tanasugarn, 6-3, 6-1, in a second-round match on Stadium Court.
The top-seeded Sharapova fended off all six break points against her serve as she wrapped up the match in 1 hour and 11 minutes before a capacity crowd.
Sharapova quickly took a 4-0 first-set lead as late-arriving fans were still getting to their seats. After Tanasugarn held serve, the hard serving Russian held serve to take a 5-1 lead.
The set, which took 31 minutes, came to a close when Sharapova broke Tanasugarn’s serve.
Sharapova began the second set with two double faults, but recovered to hold serve. After Tanasugarn held serve, Sharapova reeled off three straight games to take a 4-1 lead.
Later, with the score at 5-3. Sharapova slammed the door on the match as she easily held serve at love.
