Unseeded Jamea Jackson saved the best for last, but it wasn’t enough as she dropped a first-round match at the Acura Classic to Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-1 in one-hour and 10 minutes.
On a warm, sunny day on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Schnyder, who is seeded 11th, lost her serve in the third game of the opening set to fall behind 2-1.
The Swiss star then broke Jackson three times in winning five games in a row and capturing the first set in 33 minutes. The American was hurt by five double faults in the set.
Schnyder continued to roll in the second set as she built a 5-1 lead. Serving for the set, she wasn’t about to give Jackson any breaks as she challenged an out call on her serve at 15-15 and won the challenge to take a 30-15 lead as the call was changed to an ace.
The final game turned out to be the longest of the match going 22 points with eight deuces. Jackson, who has represented the U.S. in Fed Cup play, put up a gallant fight as she turned back seven match points.
