Lilia Osterloh of the United States put up a spirited fight, but ended up losing her second-round qualifying match at the Acura Classic to Yuliana Fedak of the Ukraine, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3.
The match, which took 2 hours and 13 minutes, did not start out well for Osterloh as she lost her serve twice and found herself down 5-1. After holding serve, she broke Fedak for the only time in the set to make the score 5-3.
The Ukrainian, who hit strong service returns throughout the match, took a 40-0 lead and would go on to break Osterloh’s serve to win the first set in 35 minutes.
Osterloh took a 3-2 advantage in the second set when she broke Fedak’s serve with a cross court forehand winner at 0-40.
After the American held serve for a 4-2 lead, Fedak lost only four points in winning the next three games to take a 5-4 lead.
Serving to stay in the match, Osterloh saved two match points and went on to hold serve to tie the set at 5-5. Both players easily held serve to send the second set into a tiebreak.
Osterloh took command of the tiebreak as she hit two aces on her way to a 5-1 lead. She went on to win the tiebreak and knot the match at a set apiece when Fedak sent a backhand wide on set point.
In the third set with the score tied 3-3, Fedak won 12 of the last 17 points and broke Osterloh’s serve twice in the last three games to close out the victory and qualify for the main draw.
