The three winners of the Acura Classic Opportunity tournament who received wildcards into the singles main draw were eliminated in the first round on Monday, but not before gaining some valuable experience.
Sixteen-year-old Asia Muhammed of Las Vegas faced fellow American Vania King in her first round match. King, who has played Fed Cup for the U.S., is ranked 86 in the world.
Playing on the Grandstand at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Muhammed extended King to a first-set tiebreak before falling, 7-6 (2), 6-0 in 1 hour and 29 minutes.
Fifteen-year-old Brittany Augustine of Carson was playing in the biggest event of her tennis career when she stepped on to the Grandstand in the second match of the day. She took on the tough German, Angelique Kerber who is ranked 76 in the world. Augustine came out on the short end, 6-0, 6-1.
In the opening match on Stadium Court, 15-year-old Coco Vandeweghe had the crowd buzzing as they saw her potential and power up close. Vandeweghe, who lives in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, nearly extended tour veteran Elena Bovina of Russia to a third set before losing a tough 6-3, 7-5 decision. In the second set, the American had a 5-2 lead with a set point.
