Mattek Falls to Roesch in Opening Qualifying Match

Bethanie Mattek of the United States was defeated in the first round of qualifying of the 2007 Acura Classic as she dropped a hard fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, decision to Angelika Roesch of Germany.

On a sunny afternoon on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Roesch took 1 hour and 55 minutes to eliminate Mattek, who is ranked 99 in the world.

After dropping the opening set, Mattek rebounded to tie the match at one set all as she fought off two break points when serving for the set at 5-3. At deuce, the American hit a service winner to reach her first set point. On her next serve, Mattek slammed an ace to clinch the second set.

In the third set, Mattek scored an early service break to take a 2-1 lead, but Roesch stormed back to win five of the next six games and win the match.

Roesch, who is making her first career Acura Classic appearance, overcame seven double faults in her victory, while Mattek hit six aces and six double faults.

  • Roesch is ranked 216 in the world.
  • Roesch has been ranked as high at 69 in the world (Feb. 2003).
  • Roesch has been playing tennis since age seven.
  • Roesch won a $25,000 ITF Women’s event in Italy this past April as a       qualifier.
  • Roesch advances to the second round of qualifying where she will meet Anne Kremer of Luxembourg
  • Mattek was making her second career Acura Classic appearance. She lost in the second round of the 2006 qualifying draw.
  • Mattek reached the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event in Cincinnati in 2005
  • Mattek once wore basketball shoes during her matches.
