Hingis Holds Off Dutch Teenager to Advance

Martina Hingis (SUI) 7 6
Michaella Krajicek (NED) 5 2

Seventh-seeded Martina Hingis won the first 14 points of her second-round match against 18-year-old Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands and looked like she was headed to an easy victory.

Instead, the tour veteran from Switzerland ended up with a tough fight on her hands before pulling out a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

On a cool, summer night, Hingis cruised to a 4-0 lead in the first set as the night session crowd was settling into their seats. Krajicek then put together a spirited come back to win five of the next six games to tie the set at 5-5.

Krajicek went up 40-30 in the eleventh game of the set, but Hingis came back to break serve for a 6-5 lead. Hingis, serving for the set, dropped the first point, but then smacked two aces and went on to serve out the set, which took 1 hour and 3 minutes to complete.

Both players exchanged service breaks early in the second set, but Hingis drew upon the experience that made her a two-time Acura Classic champion and won the last four games in a row to oust Krajicek.

Hingis converted on 6 of 12 point opportunities during the match which took 1 hour and 42 minutes.
