Exciting Matches Highlight First-Round of Main Draw

The top eight seed have first-round byes in the main draw at the 2007 Acura Classic, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be exciting matches in the opening round.

American Laura Granville, a two-time NCAA champion, will face tour veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand in a first-round encounter.

Granville has won all four of their career head-to-head meetings, but in their last meeting, which was last year on grass, Tanasugarn extended Granville to a third-set tiebreak before falling.

In another interesting first-round match, Argentina’s Gisela Dulko will take on Tatiana Golovin of France. These two Sony Ericsson WTA Tour stars have split their four previous head-to-head meetings.

Golovin, ranked 19 in the world, defeated Dulko in their first two meetings, but the Argentine has won the last two matches including a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(6) victory in Indian Wells last year.

Another match fans should keep an eye on is a first-round duel between Shahar Peer of Israel and India’s Sania Mirza. These two players played doubles together at Wimbledon this year, but here at the Acura Classic, they will face off in singles.

Mirza and Peer have split their two career head-to-head meetings, but have not played each other since 2005.

If you want to watch two upcoming Americans in action you might want to catch the first-round match featuring Vania King of Long Beach as she faces 16-year-old Asia Muhammed of Las Vegas.

Muhammed won the Acura Classic Opportunity Tournament last week at the San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club and was awarded a wild card into the main draw.

King, ranked 83 in the world, has represented the United States in Fed Cup play.

This is the first head-to-head meeting between King and Muhammed on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
