Dementieva Finishes Strong in First-Round Victory Over Castano

Elena Dementieva (RUS)  6 3 6
Catalina Castano (COL) 4 6 1

Ninth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia overcame seven double faults and the loss of the second set to oust Colombia’s Catalina Castano, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, in a first-round match at the 2007 Acura Classic.

Dementieva appeared to be on her way to an easy victory as she was up a set and 3-1 in the second set. Castano however, took advantage of Dementieva’s double faults and broke the Russian’s serve twice to take a 5-4 lead.

Castano, serving for the set, got out of a tight spot at 30-30 when she hit a service winner to get to set point. At 40-30, the Colombian hit a brilliant forehand cross court winner after a long rally to even the match at one set all.

After each player held serve to open the third set, Dementieva took total control and allowed Castano only six points in the last five games. Dementieva, who has been ranked as high as four in the world, reeled off 13 points in a row on her way to winning the final set in 24 minutes.
