Chakvetadze Extends Match Winning Streak and Moves Into Third Round

Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) 6 6
Meghann Shaughnessy (USA) 4 4

Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze extended her match winning streak as she dispatched Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States, 6-4, 6-4, in a second-round Acura Classic match on Stadium Court.

With her victory over Shaughnessy, Chakvetadze is on an 11-match winning streak after having won tour events in Cincinnati and Stanford before arriving in Carlsbad.

The Russian began her streak when she defeated American Vania King in Russia’s recent victory over the United States in Fed Cup.

In her second-round victory, Chakvetadze served for the first set after building a 5-2 first-set lead on the strength of two service breaks. Shaughnessy broke serve and then held to make the score 5-4.

Chakvetadze did not waste a second opportunity to serve out the set as she fired an ace on set point to clinch the set.

Shaughnessy jumped out to a 3-1 second-set lead, but lost serve as Chakvetadze came back to win four straight games and take a 5-3 lead. The American held serve to stay in the match, but Chakvetadze served for the match at 5-4.

The Russian fell behind 0-30 but took the game to 30-30 as Shaughnessy netted a forehand volley and missed a cross court backhand.

After Chakvetadze spun in a 94 mph ace to reach match point, the match, which took 1 hour and 36 minutes, ended as Shaughnessy approached the net and netted a forehand volley.
