CONCHITA MARTINEZ TO BE GIVEN "OFFICIAL AMERICAN FAREWELL" ON TUESDAY AUGUST 1ST AT ACURA CLASSIC

-- Part-Time Cardiff Resident and Former San Diego Champion is Fan Favorite at La Costa --

SAN DIEGO, CA, July 18, 2006 – Promotion Sports, Inc. today announced that it will honor Conchita Martinez with her “Official American Farewell” at this year’s 2006 Acura Classic, to be held July 29 - August 6 at the La Costa Resort & Spa. Martinez will be honored during the tournament’s night session on Tuesday, August 1st.

A part-time Cardiff resident, Martinez announced her retirement from professional singles tennis in Spain earlier this year. Her spectacular 18-year career was highlighted by a 1994 championship win at Wimbledon over Martina Navratilova and a top ten ranking for more than six straight years without a break (April 1991 to June 1997). A local fan favorite at the Acura Classic, she took the championship title in 1995, won the doubles title last year in a marathon 3-set final and was presented the Acura Classic Loyalty Award in 2003.

“The Acura Classic has always been very special to me,” noted Martinez. “In fact, it’s one of the reasons that I decided to make a home in the area. The San Diego fans have always been incredibly supportive, the climate here is ideal for tennis, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of friends.”

Noted Promotion Sports’ Raquel Giscafré: “When Conchita initially announced her retirement in Spain, there was an outpouring of love from fans all over the world. Because of her long and memorable history with the Acura Classic, we wanted to make sure to honor her here as well. Our Official American Farewell will give all her local fans the opportunity to send her off in true San Diego style.”

Promotion Sports, Inc., which owns the Acura Classic and promotes a variety of professional tennis events, is a private corporation headquartered in Carlsbad, California. Founded in 1982 by Raquel Giscafré and Jane Stratton, former professional tennis players, the company is dedicated to promoting sports and women’s tennis worldwide.

The Acura Classic is sponsored by American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
