SAN DIEGO, CA, June 27, 2006 – Promotion Sports, Inc. today announced that the 2006 Acura Classic (July 29 - August 6) will host its fourth annual charity event to benefit the Scripps Polster Breast Care Center on Thursday, August 3rd at 5:00 PM. Hosted by tennis legend Pam Shriver, the event will consist of a gala dinner with silent and live auctions to be held at the La Costa Resort & Spa. Last year's event raised a record $280,400 and this year the tournament has set its goal to break the record and raise more than $300,000 in a single night. Organizers are encouraging all tennis fans to participate in the drive by either attending the tournament on August 3rd and donating at the “Fund-a-Mammogram” table in the Acura Pavilion, or visiting the Acura Classic website ( www.acuraclassic.com ) to donate if they're not able to attend the event.
This year's charity dinner event is being held in honor and remembrance of local sports marketing executive and journalist Irv Grossman, a much-loved member of the Acura Classic family who passed away this May. Mr. Grossman was the driving force behind Acura's involvement in the sport of women's tennis and responsible for bringing the company to the San Diego tournament.
A variety of items will be auctioned at the charity dinner, including tennis paraphernalia, trips, luxury packages at La Costa and more. Some of the more interesting items up for auction this year will be the “Miss Chrissy,” a classic wooden tennis racquet signed by Chris Evert, a Lance Armstrong jersey, and a unique quilt that features images of many popular tennis stars. In addition, guests will be able to bid on special private parties-for-100 and a luncheon-for-50 from the Oceanside and Clairemont Outback restaurants. Following the dinner, and after the evening's first match, Pam Shriver will conduct a live on-court auction for attendees of the tournament's night session to raise additional money
Over the past three years, the Acura Classic's Benefit for Breast Cancer has raised over $750,000 for the Scripps Polster Breast Care Center. Since the Acura Classic underwrites the entire event, every penny raised goes to the charity.
