It will be an incredible day of tennis on Wednesday at the 2005
Acura Classic with 18 matches scheduled to be played. Fifth-seeded
Patty Schnyder of Switzerland will kick the action off on Stadium
Court at 10 a.m. as she faces Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic.
Did you know that Schnyder once defeated tennis legend Steffi Graf
at the US Open?
In the second match of the day on Stadium Court, former Australian
and French Open champion Mary Pierce takes the court against Germany’s
Anna-Lena Groenefeld.
Following that match, India’s Sania Mirza, one of the newest
stars in women’s professional tennis, will play her second
round match against fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia.
The Grandstand will also have a full schedule of matches as American
Lisa Raymond plays Sesil Karatantcheva of Bulgaria at 10 a.m. The
second Grandstand match will feature 14th seeded Daniela Hantuchova
against Ai Sugiyama of Japan. These two players met in the Acura
Classic in 2002 with Sugiyama winning a thrilling three-set match.
Russia’s Vera Zvonareva, who is seeded eighth this year, will
play American Mashona Washington in the last singles match of the
day session on the Grandstand.
Fans attending Wednesday’s night session on Stadium Court
are in for a big treat. At 7 p.m. seventh-seeded Kim Clijsters of
Belgium will make her first Acura Classic appearance since reaching
the finals here in 2003. The Belgian will play Poland’s Marta
Domachowska.
In the final match of evening, Elena Dementieva of Russia will
team with Tatiana Golovin of France for a first-round doubles match
against the American wildcard team of Biffy Kaufman and Lindsey
Nelson.
Kaufman and Nelson competed in the Acura Classic qualifying singles
draw last weekend after each player won an Acura Classic Opportunity
Tournament earlier this summer.
