Thursday's Acura Classic schedule will provide another day of exciting
women's professional tennis with eight singles matches along with
five doubles matches taking place.
The opening match at 10 a.m. on Stadium Court will pit Mashona
Washington, the lone American remaining in the singles draw, against
Bulgaria's Sesil Karatantcheva. Earlier this year, the 15-year-old
Karatantcheva upset former Acura Classic champion Venus Williams
at the French Open.
Second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia takes on Japan's Ai
Sugiyama in the second Stadium Court match of the day. Kuznetsova
is the reigning US Open champion.
The following match will feature fifth-seeded Patty Schnyder of
Switzerland against 17th-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy. Since
losing at Wimbledon in the first round, Schnyder has won eight of
her last nine matches on the WTA Tour.
In the final day session match on Stadium Court, Serbia's Jelena
Jankovic faces seventh-seeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium. In her second-round
match, Clijsters needed only 49 minutes to eliminate Marta Domachowska
of Poland.
A match between French Fed Cup teammates will highlight the night
session, which is scheduled to begin not before 7:30 p.m. on Stadium
Court. Sixth-seeded Mary Pierce plays compatriot Nathalie Dechy
who is seeded 10th. Pierce holds a 3-0 advantage in career head-to-head
meetings.
The Grandstand will offer tennis fans three outstanding singles
matches during the day session as an all-Russian match will begin
at 10 a.m. featuring ninth-seeded Elena Likhovtseva and unseeded
Anna Chakvetadze.
The second singles match on the Grandstand will pit Shuai Peng
of China against 16th seeded Dinara Safina of Russia. On Tuesday,
Peng upset third-seeded Elena Dementieva. Safina is the younger
sister of ATP star Marat Safin.
Fans will have the opportunity to watch one of the newest emerging
stars on the WTA Tour in the last singles match of the day on the
Grandstand. India's Sania Mirza takes on Akiko Morigami of Japan.
The 18-year-old Mirza, who qualified for the Acura Classic main
draw, began the year ranked 204 in the world. Her current ranking
is 59.
