Tennis fans will have plenty
of tennis to watch on Tuesday at the 2005 Acura Classic as 19 matches
are scheduled for the courts at the La Costa Resort and Spa.
Highlighting the schedule will be Svetlana Kuznetsova, the reigning
US Open champion, who will play at 7 p.m. on Stadium Court against
Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic. Kuznetsova, ranked fourth
in the world, is seeded second here this week.
Following that match, tennis legend Martina Navratilova will team
with Germany’s Anna-Lena Groenefeld for a first-round doubles
match against Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine and Anastassia
Rodionova of Russia.
Beginning at 10 a.m., San Diego resident Abigail Spears will start
off the day’s action on Stadium Court as she faces 17-th seeded
Francesca Schiavone of Italy. Spears is a former tournament ball
girl.
In the third match of the day on Stadium Court, Russia’s
Elena Dementieva plays Shuai Peng of China in a second round match.
Dementieva reached the finals at Roland Garros and the US Open last
year. She is seeded third at the Acura Classic.
Don’t miss Sania Mirza, the Indian tennis sensation. After
coming through qualifying to reach the main draw, she will play
her first-round match against fellow qualifier Tathiana Garbin of
Italy at 11 a.m. on Court 2.
