Sharapova and Serena Williams Headline Tuesday’s Acura Classic Schedule

It will be a FAN-tastic day of tennis on Tuesday at the Acura Classic as Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will be in action on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

The day session will begin at 10 a.m. with former tournament champion Conchita Martinez playing Emilie Loit of France on Stadium Court. It was back in 1995 when Martinez, who hails from Spain, defeated Lisa Raymond of the United States to win the title here.

Following that match, French Open champ Anastasia Myskina of Russia will be in action against Barbara Schett of Austria. This will be the Russian’s second career appearance in the Acura Classic.

In the third match on Stadium Court, top-seeded Serena Williams will be making her Acura Classic singles debut against Jelena Jankovic of Serbia & Montenegro.

In 1999, she reached the doubles final here with sister Venus, but until now, she has never played singles in the Acura Classic.

In the last Stadium Court day session match, Tamarine Tanasugarn will face Argentina’s rising star, Gisela Dulko. Tanasugarn, who lost in the final round of qualifying, entered the main draw as a lucky loser when 11th seeded Venus Williams withdrew with a right wrist sprain.

Tuesday’s night session is sure to become part of history at the Acura Classic as Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova will make her first ever tournament appearance.

The 17-year-old Russian, who is seeded sixth, will play American qualifier Lilia Osterloh at 7 p.m. on Stadium Court. This will be her first tournament match since winning Wimbledon in early July.

Following that encounter, Sharapova’s Russian compatriot, Elena Dementieva, will close the evening session with a match against Puerto Rico’s Kristina Brandi.

There will also be plenty of action on Court 9 and Court 11 as Americans Amy Frazier, Meghann Shaughnessy and Ashley Harkleroad will be in action.

The number one doubles team in the world, Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and Argentina’s Paola Suarez are scheduled to play the third match on court 11.
